This Privacy Policy explains how we collect and use personal information when you use VAR Poll.

Information we collect

When you use VAR Poll, we may collect:

- voting information, including the poll you voted on, your vote, and the time of your vote;

- an anonymous browser identifier stored in your browser's local storage;

- your IP address, which we may use to estimate the country you are voting from;

- technical information such as browser type, device information and security logs;

- if you create an account: your first name, last name and email address;

- optional account information, such as your phone number and favourite team or country.

If you use the VAR Poll mobile app and grant permission, we may also collect a device push notification token in order to send you alerts about live polls and VAR decisions. You can disable push notifications at any time in your device settings.

Local storage and cookies

We use local storage to store an anonymous identifier called anon_id. This helps us recognise a browser for basic voting integrity, for example to help prevent duplicate or abusive voting.

We also use a cookie called varp_locale to remember your language preference. This cookie does not track you and contains only your chosen language code (e.g.en, es). It expires after one year or when you clear your browser data.

You can remove local storage data and cookies by clearing your browser's site data for VAR Poll. If you do this, some parts of the service may not work as intended.

How we use your information

We use your information to:

- provide the VAR Poll service;

- record and display poll results;

- help prevent duplicate, fraudulent or abusive voting;

- understand voting patterns, including approximate country-level results;

- manage registered user accounts;

- send push notifications about live polls and VAR decisions (mobile app users who have granted permission);

- maintain the security and reliability of the service;

- improve VAR Poll.

Lawful basis

We process personal information under the following lawful bases:

- Contract: where processing is needed to provide account-based features.

- Legitimate interests: to operate the service, secure the platform, prevent abuse, analyse poll activity and maintain voting integrity.

- Consent: where you provide optional information, such as your phone number or favourite team/country, or where you grant permission for push notifications.

Sharing information

We do not sell your personal information.

We may share limited information with trusted technical service providers who help us host, maintain, secure or operate VAR Poll. These include hosting providers (such as Amazon Web Services), email delivery services, and push notification infrastructure. These providers may only process information on our instructions.

If you choose to sign in using a third-party service such as Google or Facebook, we receive limited profile information (name and email address) from that provider in accordance with their privacy policies.

We may also share information where required by law.

International transfers

Your information may be processed outside the United Kingdom, for example on servers located in the European Economic Area or the United States. Where this occurs, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place in accordance with applicable data protection law.

How long we keep information

We keep personal information only for as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy.

Account information is kept while your account remains active. Voting and technical records may be retained for event integrity, analytics and security purposes, then deleted or anonymised when no longer needed. Push notification tokens are retained while the app is in use and removed when you uninstall the app or revoke permission.

Children

VAR Poll is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
